More and more devices combine a loudspeaker, microphone, and network interface, often integrated into surveillance or intercom systems. But can these devices complement\u2014or even replace\u2014traditional loudspeakers used for alarms, mass notifications, or evacuation announcements?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"ember334\">VoIP is not AoIP<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"ember335\">First, we must distinguish between two worlds that are often confused:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Voice over IP (VoIP)<\/strong> : based on protocols such as <strong>SIP<\/strong> or <strong>RTP<\/strong>, designed for two-way communication and telephony;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Audio over IP (AoIP)<\/strong> : based on protocols such as <strong>Dante<\/strong> or <strong>AES67<\/strong>, designed for real-time multichannel audio transport with precision synchronization.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"ember337\"><br>VoIP-type IP speakers are generally <strong>duplex<\/strong>, with a <strong>built-in microphone<\/strong>. This makes them excellent tools for intercommunication or audio surveillance, but it also raises <strong>privacy concerns<\/strong>. These devices behave more like telephone terminals than notification points, which complicates their use in notification or public alarm systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"ember338\">Clear normative boundaries<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"ember339\">To date, there are no recognized standards\u2014neither <strong>ULC-S541<\/strong> (loudspeakers for fire alarm systems), nor <strong>ULC-S576<\/strong> (mass notification system), or even <strong>ULC-S524<\/strong> (design and installation of a fire alarm system) \u2013 does not explicitly address loudspeakers connected directly to an IP network. IP protocols may in some cases be used. <strong>upstream<\/strong> (between servers, controllers, or amplifiers), but <strong>never at the notification endpoint<\/strong>. This is a major difference: in certified systems, the last link must remain electrically monitorable (impedance, open circuit, short circuit), which current IP solutions do not always offer natively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"ember340\">In an analog system, the amplifier is physically connected to the speakers by a continuous electrical circuit. This connection makes it possible to detect a break, short circuit, or impedance variation, as the system directly \u00absees\u00bb the load of the audio network. Conversely, an IP loudspeaker is electrically isolated from the controller\u2014data is transmitted via a digital signal over Ethernet or fiber optics, with no continuity of ground or measurable loop. It therefore becomes impossible to electrically monitor the status of the loudspeaker: monitoring is limited to logical signals (such as a network ping or SIP message).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"ember341\">A regulatory vacuum in Canada<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"ember342\">Unlike the United States, where the <strong>Chapter 24 of NFPA 72<\/strong> oversees emergency communication systems (ECS\/MNS), the <strong>Canada does not yet have an equivalent standard.<\/strong>. Thus, an owner or an authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) may, at their discretion, <strong>accept an IP system<\/strong> for mass notification, <strong>subject to certain conditions, for example, that it is proven to be reliable, supervised, and redundant<\/strong>. This flexibility enables innovation, but it also transfers a significant amount of responsibility to the designer and integrator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"ember343\">Technical advantages of IP speakers<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Simplified infrastructure<\/strong> \u2013 A single cable for power and communication (PoE), without a central amplifier.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Native integration<\/strong> \u2013 Direct connection to security, video surveillance, or access control systems.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Embedded intelligence<\/strong> \u2013 Local functions such as audio detection, stored messages, or event triggering.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Flexibility of configuration<\/strong> \u2013 Individual addressing, granular volume control, call priorities, and dynamic routing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Remote maintenance<\/strong> \u2013 Protocol-based monitoring (e.g., SNMP), event logging, and centralized software updates.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"ember345\">Disadvantages and limitations to consider<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Variable audio performance<\/strong> \u2013 VoIP codecs (often G.711 or G.729) are limited to a bandwidth of <strong>300 Hz to 3.4 kHz<\/strong>, far from <strong>400 Hz \u2013 4 kHz<\/strong> required by fire alarm standards (<strong>UL 1480<\/strong>, <strong>ULC-S541<\/strong>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Network dependency<\/strong> \u2013 Requires a network <strong>1 Gb\/s<\/strong> stable, low latency, and prioritization of audio traffic (<strong>QoS<\/strong>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Absence of physical supervision<\/strong> \u2013 Failures in speakers, local power supplies, or PoE ports may go unnoticed without an integrated monitoring system.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Software complexity<\/strong> \u2013 Each device is a microcomputer, subject to updates, bugs, or network vulnerabilities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Regulatory non-compliance<\/strong> \u2013 None of these devices are currently <strong>certified<\/strong> for use in alarms or critical notifications.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Privacy<\/strong> \u2013 The presence of built-in microphones requires clear governance on the <strong>cybersecurity and privacy<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"ember347\">Best practices for safe use<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"ember348\">For applications where IP speakers are deemed acceptable (e.g., mass notification not connected to the fire alarm), certain measures can improve system reliability:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Separate networks (audio VLAN, management VLAN);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Employ <strong>independent power sources<\/strong> (PoE-A\/B or local DC);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Implement a <strong>A\/B topology<\/strong> installation;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Validate the <strong>bandwidth and frequency response<\/strong> minimum (ideally compliant with ULC-S541);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Document the <strong>supervision and recovery strategy<\/strong> in the event of a network failure or node loss.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"ember350\">Conclusion: technical maturity before regulatory compliance<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"ember351\">IP speakers perfectly illustrate the line between innovation and standardization. They offer considerable potential for <strong>integrated communication<\/strong> and the <strong>smart buildings<\/strong>, but their adoption in critical environments must be done with caution and method.
